Scent is one of the most powerful stimulants we are exposed to. Think about walking into your favorite restaurant, hugging your loved ones, getting into a new car, stepping outside on a crisp autumn day, or applying for favorite skincare product. All of these things are generally accompanied by a distinctive scent.
According to Psychology Today, “Scents can have positive effects on mood, stress reduction, sleep enhancement, self-confidence, and physical and cognitive performance,” says Theresa Molnar, executive director of the Sense of Smell Institute, the research and educational arm of the perfume industry's Fragrance Foundation.
I would argue that, if scents help improve mood, self confidence and physical performance, they also affect the appearance of aging. Think of the people in your life who are always positive, healthy and self-confident – then think of the people who are negative, unhealthy and self-conscious…who looks older?
The word “fragrance” seems pretty straight forward, the Miriam Webster dictionary defines fragrance as “a sweet or delicate odor (as of fresh flowers, pine trees, or perfume), something (such as a perfume) compounded to give off a sweet or pleasant odor, the quality or state of having a sweet odor.” In skincare products, “fragrance” can mean something entirely different. The FDA has given skincare companies a pass in hiding all sorts of nasty chemicals inside the simple word “fragrance” – under the guise that manufactures can’t list everything in the formula because it is “proprietary”. That is nonsense.
It’s not easy or convenient to list everything, at TRUST we debated this extensively. We only use natural extracts to add scent to our products, but it makes for a longer label, our signature scent looks like this: Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Elettaria Cardamomum Seed Extract, Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Hibiscus Abelmoschus Seed Extract, Eugenia Caryophyllus (Clove) Flower Extract, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower/Leaf Extract, Hedychium Spicatum Extract, Plumeria Rubra Flower Extract.
In today’s world of polarizing opinions there are lots of people who claim to have the best anti aging ingredient or best moisturizer or that products must be unscented to be natural. We believe that as long as you have access to all the ingredients in a product and a company stands behind their product, there are lots of good options, and lots of bad options. We have tried to use transparency and quality to position TRUST Beauty as best of the good options.
